Beer Cruising on the Danube

By Saturday, August 29, 2015 Permalink

Beer lovers in America tend to reach for big, hoppy ales, but that doesn’t mean we are incapable of appreciating finely crafted European-style lagers. You know, the kind of beers they drink in romantic places like Vienna, Prague and Budapest. If you’re a beer connoisseur, you should put this cruise on your beer bucket list:  the Danube Dreams River Cruise, a beer-themed adventure from Avalon Waterways.

This 10-day, eastbound cruise of the Danube River takes you from Prague to Budapest, with stops in Vienna, Bratislava and other lesser-known towns.  Along the way you’ll learn about the historic beers of the region from a man so deeply versed in beer history and European beer knowledge that he’s known as the “Beer Pope.”

The cruise includes an onboard beer workshop, a food and beer pairing dinner, and a beer lecture. You’ll also visit Ottakringer brewery in Vienna, which has been brewing beer since 1837.

But it’s not all about the beer. You’ll visit some of Central Europe’s splendid capitals—Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest—as well as many small towns that dot the landscape along the way. You’ll explore the grounds of majestic Hradcany Castle in Prague, explore Germany’s Passau, located at the confluence of three rivers, and Linz, Austria’s third-largest city. Visit the quaint historical theater in the resort town of Grein; and one of Europe’s largest and most spectacular monasteries at Melk. Discover pretty little Weissenkirchen in Austria’s Wachau Valley or join a tasting of Wachau wines, an important product of the region. Visit St. Martin’s Cathedral in Bratislava and end your vacation in vibrant Budapest. Guided sightseeing with Certified Local Guides in each city is sure to heighten your experience.
